History

The Department came into existence in 1976 as a Department of Mathematics and Statistics with late Professor E. A. Bangudu (then Dr. E. A. Bangudu) as its Acting Head of Department   In 1978, the Department of Statistics was carved out of the department. The syllabus for the Undergraduate Mathematics Programme which was drawn up in 1976 has since undergone several reviews.  The present syllabus, in addition to fully satisfying the minimum academic standard required by the National University Commission includes several courses and/or topics. The department commenced its postgraduate programme in 1982.   Since then, the department has produced scores of undergraduate and postgraduate students out of which several of them have done with their doctorate and Post Doctorate programme.

The department is presently headed by Professor A. S. Idowu.  The current teaching strength of the department is twenty-five.  Areas of research of academic staff include fluid mechanics, analytical dynamics, optimization, Modeling, complex analysis, numerical analysis, algebra, functional analysis and topology which we offered at various levels of degree programme and Graduate programmes. The department has  linkages with many professional bodies.
